On Tuesday morning, we were thrilled to have U.S. Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth visit our Heritage Woods of South Elgin affordable assisted living and memory care community for a Congress at Your Corner event.

Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012, Rep. Duckworth represents the Illinois 8th Congressional District. She served our country piloting Blackhawk helicopters for the Illinois Army National Guard. She was one of the first women to fly combat missions during Operation Iraqi Freedom and was awarded the Purple Heart after losing both her legs and partial use of an arm when her helicopter was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade.

Rep. Duckworth spent time talking with us about the Illinois Supportive Living program, which enables communities such as Heritage Woods of South Elgin to serve those of all incomes. She toured a resident apartment; talked with residents and guests about issues of importance to seniors and adults with disabilities; and answered questions. Of course, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid were among the topics.

Heritage Woods of South Elgin is located in west suburban Kane County and serves senior of all incomes, including those on Medicaid. The community combines the opportunity to enjoy residential apartment home living with the availability of personal assistance, help with medications and such support services as three daily meals, housekeeping and laundry.

Heritage Woods also features one of the first five affordable memory care pilot projects to be approved by the State of Illinois to operate through the Supportive Living program. The memory care apartments at White Oaks at Heritage Woods of South Elgin are designed specifically for older adults with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia.

We also were thrilled that a bus-full of residents from the Deer Path of Huntley affordable assisted living community joined us in South Elgin for the event. Deer Path of Huntley serves adults 22 to 64 years of age who have a physical disability.

We thought you would love to see a photo gallery of pictures and a video from the event.
