Honoring Those Who Served Our Country

Wednesday, November 7th, 2012

By Rick Banas of assisted living provider BMA Management, Ltd.

As Veterans Day 2012 nears, I am reminded of two people that I met on Veterans Day last year. Both served our country in World War II and were living at the Heritage Woods affordable assisted living community that BMA manages in Moline, Illinois.

Lee Trainor talked with me about where he was when he heard the news about the Bombing of Pearl Harbor and his experience in the war.

He was living in Kansas City and had gone to Hutchinson, Kansas, for a visit. Hutchinson is located on the Arkansas River, nearly 40 miles northwest of Wichita. There was a radio playing on a small table in the lobby of the hotel where he was staying. It stopped playing so he went over to see what was wrong and heard the announcement.

Two weeks later, Lee went into the service of our country at the age of 18. He was in the second wave of Marines to land on Iwo Jima in the battle with the Japanese for this strategic stronghold in 1945. He watched from within a few hundred yards as Marines raised the U.S. flag on Mount Suribachi.

He spent nearly six weeks in combat on the island but said he does not remember a single thing from about the third day until the last day of combat. About 4 a.m. that morning, a live mortar landed just two feet away from where he was standing. He reasons that the mortar did not explode because the volcanic soil he was standing in was so soft.

Following his discharge from the service, Lee went to the University of Missouri in Columbia and on to enjoy a career in newspapers and advertising. While working for the Rocky Mountain News in Denver, he had the opportunity to cover President Eisenhower at a ranch up in the high country.

Marines raised the U.S. flag on Mount SuribachiFred Collins was working as a machinist at the Arsenal in Rock Island when Pearl Harbor was attacked. He served as a Fighting Seabee in the South Pacific. He was part of the Battle of Okinawa, which was the largest amphibious invasion of the Pacific campaign and the bloodiest battle in the Pacific War. Reportedly, more people lost their lives in the Battle of Okinawa than in the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Fred talked about serving in a fox hole during the battle, with bullets flying and Kamikaze aircraft and mortar shells dropping from the sky. His buddy serving next to him in the fox hole was killed. Fred was awarded a Bronze Star for his service.

100 Reasons to Celebrate

Thursday, July 12th, 2012

Naomi Flesher at Heritage Woods of Watseka (activity room)By Rick Banas of assisted living provider BMA Management, Ltd., and Linda Carey, Resident Services Coordinator at the Heritage Woods of Watseka affordable assisted living community.

Naomi Flesher had a hundred reasons to celebrate last week. She became a Centenarian on Friday, July 6, 2012.

On the day she was born 100 years ago, the 1912 Stockholm”s Olympic Games were opening in Stockholm, Sweden. These were the games where Jim Thorpe gained fame as the World’s Greatest Athlete.

Naomi, who was the First Miss Iroquois County Queen, lived in her own home in Watseka until she was 92. She moved into Heritage Woods just days after the community opened for occupancy in the summer of 2004.

Naomi Flesher from Heritage Woods of Watseka with her grand childrenIn her honor, the staff of Heritage Woods hosted a special Birthday Party on Friday afternoon. The Dining Room was decorated in Naomi’s favorite colors of purple and yellow. Refreshments included a purple punch made with grape juice. To kick-off the celebration, those in attendance launched 100 purple and yellow balloons.

Naomi’s children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were in attendance. All eight great grandchildren were wearing T-Shirts the featured a picture of Naomi and the wording “My Great Grandmother Turns 100 Today!”

Naomi attributes living to the young age of 100 to never smoking, never drinking and watching what she ate. She also believes her faith had a lot to do with it. One of her grandsons mentioned “her genes” and “not worrying about anything.”

Naomi Flesher from Heritage Woods of Watseka in her youthSome of the biggest changes that she has seen over her lifetime are all of the scientific advances such as TVs, computers and going to the moon. She also talked about changes in morality, saying with a grin, “you’ve got to remember, I am 100 so I have been around for a long time.”

From her years of experience, the best advice she has for her great grandchildren is “do what you think is right” and “always treat people good.”

She says she does not have any “favorite memories.” Rather, she feels “every day was her favorite.”

Naomi adds that she loves living at Heritage Woods because “it is just like home.” The staff is nice, the food is good and there is always something to keep her busy.

“The people that work and live here are just one big family.”

Are You ‘Granny Scam’ Proof

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

By Rick Banas of BMA Management, Ltd.

The call came just in the nick of time to save a grandmother in Springfield, Illinois from what has become known as the Grandparents Scam, said Erin Ruebbelke, Policy Advisor with the Illinois Attorney General’s Office.

She was conducting a program earlier this week at the Heritage Woods of Manteno affordable assisted living community that we manage in Manteno, Illinois, to help educate older adults and their families on frauds and scams that target older adults. The Silver Beat program was developed by Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s Office.

The grandmother, Erin said, had received a phone call in the middle of the night from someone posing as her grandson. “Grandma”, the caller said, “I’ve been arrested on a DUI. Please don’t tell Mom or Dad. I can get out if you just wire $3,000.”

The grandmother was standing at Western Union with the cash in hand when her grandson just happened to call. He let her know that he was okay and not in jail in Canada.

The calls usually come in the middle of the night, and the caller usually will ask for Grandma. The scam artists claim to be attorneys, paralegals and law enforcement officers as well as frantic grandchildren.

The Grandparents Scam is the #1 Scam going on right now, Erin noted. Especially be careful this time of year, as calls often come around Spring Break.

Medicare scams also are popular, Erin noted. Beware of callers who claim to need personal information such as Medicare numbers or bank account information to activate new Medicare benefits and folks offering free scooters in exchange for your Medicare number.

A great way to help protect yourself against Medicare fraud is to be sure your review your quarterly Medicare Summary Notices (MSN).

Among the other topics covered in the program were Reverse Mortgages, Credit Cards and Credit Reports.

Reverse Mortgages

May be beneficial, especially if you have built up equity in your home and are struggling to pay bills. To be eligible, you must be 62 years of age or older and own your home. The home must be your primary place of residency, and you must get counseling from a HUD-certified counselor.

Credit Cards

With the Credit Cardholders Bill of Rights, credit card companies have to send your statement a minimum of 21 days in advance of the payment due date and have to send you a notice of changes 45 days in advance.

Credit Reports

You need to keep a close eye on your Credit Report. It is the #1 way to protect yourself from Identity Theft.

Free Credit Reports are available from the following three Credit Reporting Agencies:

· Experian

· Equifax

· TransUnion

Much more information about how to protect yourself or a loved one from fraud and scams targeting older adults can be obtained by visiting the Silver Beat website.

We also invite you to attend the Silver Beat training program on March 10 at our Heritage Woods of Chicago affordable assisted living community and on March 29 at our Heritage Woods of Watseka affordable assisted living community.
