Erin Weir of Age Options has brought to our attention that a Fraud Alert has been issued about scammers targeting people with diabetes.
The scammers are calling and offering free diabetic testing strips.
The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) recently posted updated information about the scam. You can listen to the Fraud Alert for People with Diabetes podcast by Deputy Inspector General Gary Cantrell or read the transcript by clicking here
In particular, OIG warns folks to be wary of unsolicited phone calls in which the person calling offers you free supplies or offers to waive Medicare co-payments. Medical providers and suppliers are not supposed to call you to offer free Medicare supplies or services.
Also be wary of anybody who calls you and asks for personal, financial or Medicare information.
Erin also noted that the Elgin Police Department in Elgin, Illinois, received a report from an older adult about a phone caller who claimed to be from AT&T. The caller said that the older adult had won 500 free long distance telephone calls for paying bills on time. The caller then told the older adult “let me transfer you to another person to get more information.” Fortunately, the older adult realized that this might be a scam, hung up the phone, and contacted AT&T. The company said that it is not making calls like this and never does.
Remember that if anyone calls you and asks for personal information over the phone, it is probably a scam. Just hang up.

Russell Yohn caught my attention shortly after U.S. Congressman Joe Walsh had finished his “Senior Forum” at the Heritage Woods affordable assisted living community that BMA manages in South Elgin, Illinois.
Given that the focus of the forum was on what is happening in our nation’s Capitol, he wanted me to see “The Good Country Emblem” that he had created.
The words he used to describe a Good Country are as follows:
A good country to live in is composed of good people
Who help to keep it so
By each one doing one’s part
As one’s actions do count.
I thought that you would be interested in seeing his creation as well as some of the other handiwork that he showed me as we sat and talked in his studio apartment at Heritage Woods of South Elgin.
Russell painted scaled-sized images of our world on plastic eggs. With all the attention to Global Warming, the one that I found the most fascinating was the version that shows how much land was covered by glaciers during the last Ice Age. He painted the Ice Age view onto a L’eggs pantyhose container.
He also enjoys working with geometric shapes (as shown above).

By Rick Banas of BMA Management, Ltd. the leading provider of assisted living in Illinois.
Thanks to Erin Weir of Age Options, we learned earlier this week about an article on the National Council on Aging (NCOA) website that notes that financial scams with older adults as the victim have become so prevalent that they are now considered to be “The Crime of the 21st Century.”
The scams can be devastating to older adults, the NCOA warns, adding that it is not just the wealthy who are being targeted. Low-income older adults also are at risk.
In the article, the NCOA also warns that more than 90% of the reported cases of financial abuse allegedly involve family members taking advantage of parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles.
Here are the scams that made the NCOA list of “Top 10 Scams Targeting Older Adults.”
- Healthcare/Medicare/Health Insurance Fraud
- Counterfeit Prescription Drugs
- Funeral and Cemetery Scams
- Fraudulent Anti-Aging Productsv
- Telemarketing, including fake-accident ploys, fake charities and The Pigeon Drop.
- Intranet Fraud, including messages that appear to be from a legitimate company asking for personal information.
- Investment Schemesv
- Homeowners/Reverse Mortgage Scams
- Sweepstakes/Lottery Scams
- The Grandparents Scam
For more information on each of these scams and to read the full story, click here.

By Rick Banas of BMA Management, Ltd. The leading provider of Assisted Living in Illinois.
This past Sunday, Father Terry Keehan of Holy Family Catholic Community in Inverness, Illinois, asked a classic question about what motivates us in life.
“Why do you do what you do?”
At BMA Management, we have spent considerable time examining the question. We are a mission-driven company that believes strongly that the “why” has to drive what we do and how we do it.
For BMA, our why is our mission, which is to “Touch Lives” by making a difference in the lives of older adults and their families each and every day.
How we do that is by providing dignified lifestyles enriched by our values of love, compassion and dignity.
What we do is to operate senior living communities that focus on helping residents achieve as much independence as possible for as long as possible. We currently operate 36 communities, all of which are located in Illinois. Together these communities house more than 3,200 homes and apartments.
Thirty-three of the communities operate under the Illinois Supportive Living (SLF) program, which enables the communities to serve older adults of all incomes, including those on Medicaid or who only receive monthly Social Security benefits.
Our philosophy is to place those we serve first in each and every decision that we make.
We work hard at making sure that our mission, our values and our philosophy are not just nice words and statements that hang on the walls in our communities or are mentioned in handbooks and manuals.
Our why, our mission of “Touching Lives,” is our driving force.
What is your mission? Why do you do what you do?
What are your thoughts? Leave a comment and let us know.

By Margaret Seggebruch of Prairie Winds of Urbana

Thanksgiving is a time for memories of times past. The residents of the Prairie Winds of Urbana affordable assisted living community wanted to share their Thanksgiving memories with you.
Bill White was only twelve years old when he killed the Thanksgiving turkey with an axe at his grandparents. Asked if it was the best tasting turkey he ever tasted, he stated “every year, the turkey is the best I ever tasted”.
Pat Crawford shared that she and her husband cooked Thanksgiving together and served around 30 family members. The children sat at their table and the adults sat at another. The older kids were responsible to watch over the little ones. She would always serve oyster dressing, and her husband and dad would have a contest to see who could eat the most raw oysters.
Orlin Highland stated that his family always had chicken for Thanksgiving because they couldn’t afford a turkey.
Gale Heiser’s family had capon for their Thanksgiving dinner. The tradition was started when he was young and continues today.
Joan Albers shared that when outdoor grills became popular, her husband would always do the turkey on the grill. She always had to make corn pudding, pumpkin and pecan pie. When her daughter married, she had to add cherry pie to the menu for her son-in-law.
Most residents stated that when they were young they had Thanksgiving dinner at their grandparent’s house and that their grandparents had raised the turkey on the farm. Thanksgiving back then was a time for families to get together and not a day to watch football and plan your Black Friday shopping trip.
Prairie Winds of Urbana is an affordable assisted living community managed by BMA Management, Ltd. The community is located in Urbana, Illinois, and houses 99 studio and one-bedroom apartments for adults 65+ of all incomes.
