Thirty-two teams of residents from affordable assisted living communities located throughout the State of Illinois have qualified for the playoffs in the 2013 Affordable Assisted Living Coalition’s 2013 Wii Bowling Tournament.

105-Year-Old Assisted Living Resident on Longevity and Turtle Soup

Thursday, August 23rd, 2012

Nellie Blacksmith with grandchildren at Heritage Woods of Batavia for her 105th BirthdayBy Rick Banas of assisted living provider BMA Management, Ltd.

Yesterday was a special day for Nellie Blacksmith. The resident of our Heritage Woods affordable assisted living community in Batavia, Illinois, celebrated her 105th Birthday.

When she was born on August 22, 1907, Teddy Roosevelt was serving as the 26th President of the United States; the first fully automatic washing machine had just been created by a company called Seeburg; and Oklahoma had yet to be admitted as the 46th State into the Union.

Nellie celebrated in the style she likes the best – without much fanfare. Staff and residents sang “Happy Birthday” as her grandson and great granddaughter escorted her to the dining room for lunch. Her chair was decorated with balloons and her table with a vase of roses. She was treated to a plate of shrimp with cocktail sauce – her favorite food – along with asparagus, baked potato, a glass of champagne, and, of course, birthday cake for dessert.

Drawn Box TurtleNellie attributes her longevity to turtle soup. My grandfather would go turtle hunting in the fall at a place in Oswego, says Nellie’s grandson. We also would go there to hunt pheasant and rabbit.

My grandmother prepared food from scratch. She would cook the turtle soup and then freeze it in batches to have throughout the winter.

Nellie also gives credit to the lifestyle she enjoys and the care she receives at Heritage Woods.

Nellie Blacksmith with Marcy LoDolce at Heritage Woods of Batavia for her 105th BirthdayNellie is among the first residents to move into the community, which opened in 2003, says Marcy LoDolce, Administrator.

Once again this year, Nellie kept up her birthday tradition of sending Marcy a “Thank You” note.

The note thanked Marcy for another year.

“I couldn’t have done it without you,” Nellie told the staff as they launched balloons into the air yesterday in Nellie’s honor.

100 Reasons to Celebrate

Thursday, July 12th, 2012

Naomi Flesher at Heritage Woods of Watseka (activity room)By Rick Banas of assisted living provider BMA Management, Ltd., and Linda Carey, Resident Services Coordinator at the Heritage Woods of Watseka affordable assisted living community.

Naomi Flesher had a hundred reasons to celebrate last week. She became a Centenarian on Friday, July 6, 2012.

On the day she was born 100 years ago, the 1912 Stockholm”s Olympic Games were opening in Stockholm, Sweden. These were the games where Jim Thorpe gained fame as the World’s Greatest Athlete.

Naomi, who was the First Miss Iroquois County Queen, lived in her own home in Watseka until she was 92. She moved into Heritage Woods just days after the community opened for occupancy in the summer of 2004.

Naomi Flesher from Heritage Woods of Watseka with her grand childrenIn her honor, the staff of Heritage Woods hosted a special Birthday Party on Friday afternoon. The Dining Room was decorated in Naomi’s favorite colors of purple and yellow. Refreshments included a purple punch made with grape juice. To kick-off the celebration, those in attendance launched 100 purple and yellow balloons.

Naomi’s children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were in attendance. All eight great grandchildren were wearing T-Shirts the featured a picture of Naomi and the wording “My Great Grandmother Turns 100 Today!”

Naomi attributes living to the young age of 100 to never smoking, never drinking and watching what she ate. She also believes her faith had a lot to do with it. One of her grandsons mentioned “her genes” and “not worrying about anything.”

Naomi Flesher from Heritage Woods of Watseka in her youthSome of the biggest changes that she has seen over her lifetime are all of the scientific advances such as TVs, computers and going to the moon. She also talked about changes in morality, saying with a grin, “you’ve got to remember, I am 100 so I have been around for a long time.”

From her years of experience, the best advice she has for her great grandchildren is “do what you think is right” and “always treat people good.”

She says she does not have any “favorite memories.” Rather, she feels “every day was her favorite.”

Naomi adds that she loves living at Heritage Woods because “it is just like home.” The staff is nice, the food is good and there is always something to keep her busy.

“The people that work and live here are just one big family.”
- Naomi Flesher

Sex & the Senior – Episode I

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

By Rick Banas, of BMA Management, Ltd.

On his radio show several weeks ago, Dennis Miller commented that we are reaching the point in this country where fathers may not only need to talk with their sons about the birds and the bees but also about their prostate problems.

Then along comes news stories in the past two weeks about sexually transmitted diseases among older adults.

One of the stories stresses that “a record number of seniors are having unprotected sex and contracting a myriad of sexually transmitted diseases.” Click here to read the article that was posted on EmpowHER on June 30, 2010.

The second story features comments from Dr. Anupam B. Jena of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Dr. Jenna noted that while younger adults have far more sexually transmitted diseases than older adults, the rates for sexually transmitted diseases are growing at higher rates among older adults.

The article’s “Viagra-Popping Seniors Lead the Pack for STDs” headline certainly catches your attention. According to research cited in the Annals of Internal Medicine, the rate of sexually transmitted diseases in older men taking erectile dysfunctional medications such as Viagra is twice as high as in their non-medicated peers.

Fortunately, Dr. Jenna recommends that physicians take a few minutes to discuss safe sex with older men when they are prescribing drugs like Viagra.

I was envisioning adult children now having to sit down to have “The Talk” with their parents and community service ads featuring older adult parents stressing the importance of their adult children addressing the issue with them.

Surfing the web, there is plenty of information available on Sex and the Senior.

For instance, the Mayo Clinic offers on its website sex tips for older men since many seniors continue to enjoy their sexuality into their 80s and beyond. Click here to read more.

You can also find advice from the Mayo Clinic on how to maintain a satisfying sex life as you age. Click here to read more.

The article notes that “the need for intimacy is ageless” and cite physical health and self-esteem benefits of seniors having a healthy sex life.

Information on sexually transmitted diseases also can be found on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s web site. Click here
