From Accordion Awareness to Waffle Iron Celebrations

Thursday, June 6th, 2013

By Rick Banas of assisted living and senior living provider BMA Management, Ltd.

After spending some time surfing the web for information on National Dairy Month for one of the assisted living communities managed by BMA, I became intrigued by all of the special days, weeks and months we celebrate.

Some are serious, providing the opportunity to focus on health awareness and safety and events of historical significance. Others provide opportunities for fun and enjoyment.

Below are examples in the month of June 2013:

June 6 – D-Day

D-Day [1944] marks the start of Allied Invasion of Normandy, France during World War II.

June 6 – National Gardening Exercise Day

Weather you have a green thumb or not, take time to celebrate gardening, which is said to have therapeutic benefits for your mind, body and soul.

Chocolate Ice Cream

June 7 – National Chocolate Ice Cream Day

Do we really need an excuse to enjoy one of my favorite flavors of ice cream?

June 11 – Corn on the Cob Day

Churchview Supportive Living, an affordable assisted living community that BMA manages on Chicago’s southwest side, is hosting a Corn on the Cob celebration at 1 p.m. on Tue, June 11, 2013.

June 14 – Flag Day [U.S.A]

In the United States of America, June 14 is designated as Flag Day. It’s a day set aside to show respect for our nation’s Flag. Our country’s first flag was made by Betsy Ross, a seamstress who made clothes for George Washington, our first President. There is a special custom for folding the Flag of the United States. For an explanation, we invite you to watch this video of the Flag Folding Ceremony that was conducted at our Prairie Winds of Urbana affordable assisted living community in Champaign County, Illinois:

June 15 – 8th Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

The Illinois Department on Aging works to protect the rights of seniors and prevent elder abuse. For more information, visit…

June 16 – Father’s Day

We celebrate Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June. It was recognized as an official national holiday for the first time in 1966 and was made permanent in 1972, nearly 60 years after President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day official in 1914.

June 21 – Summer Solstice & First Day of Summer

June 29 – National Waffle Iron Day

National Waffle Day, however, is celebrated in March.

June 10-16 – National Men’s Health Awareness Week

On average, men have shorter life spans and tend to be less healthy than women. The week leading up to and including Father’s Day is designed to heighten awareness of preventable health problems, promote healthy living and encourage early detection. You are encouraged to wear blue as a reminder of what men can do to improve their health. You can also visit

Cataract Awareness Month

More than 50% of Americans are likely to have cataracts by the age of 80. Cataracts the leading cause of blindness in the world. Tips about prevention and treatment are available on the Prevent Blindness America website.

National Accordion Awareness Month

You can enjoy the accordion music of Willana Vogel at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at John Evans Supportive Living, an affordable assisted living community BMA manages in Pekin, Illinois.

Dairy Icon

National Dairy Month

Our Heritage Woods of Watseka affordable assisted living community will celebrate National Dairy Month and the start of summer by offering homemade ice cream sandwiches at the community at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26, 2013.

Why the American Flag is Folded 13 Times for a Veteran

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

By Rick Banas of BMA Management, Ltd.

American Flag Animated Flag Folding ProcessAs part of the Veterans Day program at Prairie Winds of Urbana a couple of years ago, resident Jim Hall participated in a Flag Folding Ceremony that showed how and Why the Flag of the United States of America is Folded 13 Times for a Veteran.

As Veterans Day 2011 nears, we are proud to post this video of the Flag Folding Ceremony. You can see how the flag is folded and hear the significance of each of the 13 folds.

Jim served in the U.S. Army during World War II; he was awarded five Bronze and one Silver Star.

He has been a resident of the Prairie Winds affordable assisted living community that BMA manages in Urbana, Illinois, for more than four years. A wall of his apartment at Prairie Winds is decorated in tribute to his service.

Jim and three other veterans who live at Prairie Winds were among 75 veterans who had the opportunity to go an Honor Flight to visit Washington, D.C, in October. We will be posting a Blog about the Honor Flight on Veterans Day.

We thank all those who have served our country in the military.
