Can Assisted Living Help Prevent Premature Death?

Friday, April 26th, 2013

By Rick Banas of assisted and senior living provider BMA Management, Ltd.

With my years of experience in assisted and senior living, an article recently posted on the Medical News Today website really has me thinking.

The article <link> is about research that ties social isolation to shorter lifespans in older adults.

One of the surprising results, the article notes, is that even people who are happy being alone are more likely to die prematurely if they don’t have enough social interactions with other humans.

One of the biggest benefits of living in an assisted living community is all of the opportunities that are available for residents to socialize with others.

Instead of eating alone in front of a television, older adults in assisted living communities are dining with other residents.

They can gather with other residents in a lounge area to watch a movie, a ball game or their favorite television shows.

They can join others for exercise programs. Our Heritage Woods of DeKalb community, for instance, offers Tai Chi on Thursdays; Heritage Woods of Centralia has Yoga on Wednesdays; John Evans Supportive Living in Pekin hosts a “Move Those Joints” program three times a week. Residents of Bridle Brook in Champaign County can stay active with a Walking Club in the indoor comfort of their assisted living and memory care community.

They can participate with other residents in the activities and special events offered by the community.

Wii Bowling has become a very popular activity, with the Affordable Assisted Living Coalition (AALC) hosting an annual statewide Wii Bowling Tournament. This year, nearly 80 teams of residents from affordable assisted living communities in Illinois entered the competition, which will culminate with the top teams bowling against each other in a Final Four on May 14 and 15 in Decatur, Illinois.

This year, the AALC also is hosting a statewide Spelling Bee. More than 100 teams of residents entered the competition, with 12 teams qualifying to compete in the Spelling Finals in Decatur on May 14 and 15. The most frequently used words in the Scripps National Spelling Bee will be used.

Other recent and upcoming programs at the communities BMA manages include:

Senior Laughing

Laughter Yoga

Mother’s Day Celebrations and Memorial Day Tributes

Fashion Shows with residents and staff modeling the clothing

BBQs, Ice Cream Socials and Happy Hours

Senior Proms

Hawaiian Luaus

Musical entertainment and health education programs

Residents can participate no matter what the weather.

With this in mind, isn’t it possible that assisted living can help prevent premature death among seniors?

Assisted Living Residents Hooked On Wii

Wednesday, March 13th, 2013

By Rick Banas of senior living and assisted living provider BMA Management, Ltd.

Heritage Woods of Manteno Wii Bowling Team with Manteno Firefighters & ParamedicsIf you think assisted living residents do nothing but sit around and play BINGO, you should have been at the Heritage Woods affordable assisted living community that we manage in Manteno, Illinois, this past Friday afternoon.

For the second year in a row, residents on the community’s Wii bowling team smoked firefighters and paramedics with the Manteno Fire Protection District during an annual Wii Bowling Challenge.

In fact, the members of the Acorns did themselves one better in this year’s competition. Last year, they beat the firefighters by a combined total of 225 pins, or an average of 37.5 pins per bowler per game. This year, they won by a combined total of 226 pins.

Resident Helen Wotring, who is 86 years young, had the high game, tossing a 236. Her game included a turkey and a four bagger.

“I like to show off,” Helen told those who were gathered in the dining room at Heritage Woods to cheer on the bowlers. It only took a couple of thousand games to be able to do this, she said.

“You have every right to be bragging,” Mary Robbins of the Fire Protection told Helen.

Scott Spanos rolled the high game for the Fire Protection District, tossing a 167.

Wii Bowling is an activity that has become very popular at the assisted living communities that BMA manages.

We have 44 teams of residents entered into the 2013 Supportive Living Wii Bowling Championship sponsored by the Affordable Assisted Living Coalition (AALC).

4th Annual Wii Bowling Tournament for Supportive Living Week 2013 - Badge

AALC represents affordble assisted living communities located throughout Illinois that operate through the state’s Supportive Living program. The program enables the communities to serve older adults and adults with physical disabilities of all incomes, including those on Medicaid.

The 4th Annual Supportive Living Wii Championship will culminate with a Final Four competition to be held on May 14 and 15 at the Decatur Conference Center & Hotel in Decatur, Illinois.

Last year, three of teams competing in the Final Four were from BMA communities.

The Oy Vey! team of residents from Heritage Woods of Bolingbrook brought home the Second Place trophy. Team member Michael Malina had the high game in the Final Four competition. He rolled a 279 in the semi-finals. In addition, team member Manny Shellist was recognized for being the oldest bowler ever to compete in an AALC Wii bowling Final Four. Manny, who turned 101 not long after the Final Four, averaged 176.

The Prairie Pins from Prairie Living at Chautauqua in Carbondale finished in Third Place.

For the Silver Sliders from Cambridge House of Maryville, qualifying for the Final Four was old hat. It was the third year in a row that the team from the community in the St. Louis Metro East area were among the four best teams in the state. In 2010, the Silver Sliders struck gold and brought home the First Place trophy.

For those of you who might be interested, we invite you to watch the 4th Annual Wii Bowling Championship Final Four live in Decatur. If you cannot make it, live streaming on the Internet will be available.

We will be sure to keep your informed.

Assisted Living Residents Smoke Firefighters

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

By Rick Banas of senior living provider BMA Management, Ltd.

Heritage Woods of Manteno Mighty Acorn Wii Bowling teamThe members of the Heritage Woods of Manteno Mighty Acorns were all smiles last Friday afternoon as they took the local Manteno Community Fire Protection District up on a challenge.

Firefighter Adam McCurdy had challenged resident Larry Lanoue to a Wii Bowling match. The idea expanded into a Wii Bowling Tournament held at the affordable assisted living community in Manteno, Illinois. The tournament featured six residents bowling against six firefighters, with each bowler tossing one game.

The residents, who are all members of the community’s Mighty Acorns Wii Bowling team, won hands-down. They outscored the firefighters by a total of 225 pins. The average score for the residents was 37.5 pins higher than the average score for the fighters.

Heritage Woods of Manteno Mighty Acorn Larry Lanoue“This is like taking candy from a baby,” said resident Larry Lanoue, after throwing a strike with his left hand. “Right-handed, I practice a lot,” he proclaimed. “Left-handed, not as much.”

Larry tossed a 204, which was the high game for the afternoon. Resident Marie Reneau, who is 87 years of age, bowled a 187. Resident Isabelle Straley had a 183.

Resident Helen Wotring, who is 85, tossed a 170. She said she was not used to bowling in front of the crowd of residents and family members who packed the room to cheer on the Mighty Acorns along with the photographer and reporter from The Daily Journal who were there to cover the event.

Heritage Woods of Manteno Mighty Acorn Wii Bowling Team PlayingHelen, who says she is “hooked” on Wii Bowling, is among those at the community who bowl every day. She has tossed two 300 games.

For the Firefighters on Friday, Mary Robbins had the high game, tossing a 187.

Firefighter McCurdy, on the other hand, was advised that he might have to walk back to the firehouse. He bowled a 72. Next time, he said, “we’re going to play Euchre.”

Members of the Mighty Acorns at Heritage Woods of Manteno are competing again this year in the annual Supportive Living Wii Bowling Tournament. The Tournament features teams of residents from Supportive Living communities located throughout Illinois bowling against each other, with Final Four competition held in Springfield, Illinois in April. In 2011, the Mighty Acorns were one of five teams from affordable assisted living communities managed by BMA to qualify for the tournament’s Elite Eight.

Saluting Supportive Living as Model for Affordable Assisted Living

Friday, April 29th, 2011

By Wayne Smallwood, Executive Director of the Affordable Assisted Living Coalition

This week, the Affordable Assisted Living Coalition (AALC) along with Supportive Living communities throughout the State of Illinois joined together to celebrate Supportive Living Week 2011.

Our 4th Annual Supportive Living Week celebration provides a special opportunity to tell people the good news about Supportive Living.

The program is the best program for affordable assisted living in the country and should be a model for other states to follow.

The program is designed to serve older adults and disabled adults of all incomes who need some help to maintain their independence but do not require nursing home care. It especially benefits those who cannot afford private pay assisted living. Personal choice, dignity, privacy and individuality are emphasized.

Residents and their families as well as the State of Illinois benefit from the program.

Residents enjoy the opportunity to live in a wonderful residential environment while receiving the help with medications and personal assistance they need.

The State benefits because the cost of a resident with Medicaid support living in a Supportive Living community is 40% less than what it would cost the State for the person to live in a nursing home.

Since the first Supportive Living community began operating in the fall of 1999, the program has grown significantly. Today, there are 126 communities, housing more than 9,800 apartments, operating in 73 Counties in the State.

To help celebrate Supportive Living Week this year, the Affordable Assisted Living Coalition sponsored four major programs.

Art is Ageless

Many residents in Supportive Living communities have artistic talents that they have honed over the years and others have skill sets that they developed while living in our communities. This year, we created the “Art is Ageless” Contest as part our the celebration of Supportive Living Week as an opportunity for all artists – writers, crafters and visual artists alike – to share their passion for the arts.

Participants from throughout the state created and submitted 06 entries in the categories of prose, soft crafts, hard crafts and visual arts.

One of the artists noted that she started painting at 71 and still likes dabbling at it at 99. One of the winners took up wood carving when he was 92 and created his award-winning work at 96.

A panel of judges selected the winners. A complete list can be found below.

Winners were honored at our Awards Luncheon held earlier this week at the President Abraham Lincoln Hotel and Conference Center in Springfield.

Scrapbooking

Communities throughout the state created scrapbooks about the engaging lifestyle that Supportive Living communities offer. With paper, photos and stickers, the scrapbooks depicted the “Care, Community and Comfort” that this affordable senior housing model offers.

A complete list of Scrapbook Award winners can be found below.

Wii Bowling

This year, we sponsored our second annual Wii Bowling Competition. Sixty teams of residents in Supportive Living communities throughout Illinois participated.

The competition culminated earlier this week with the “Final Four” in Springfield.

All four teams that rolled their way into the Final Four won their respective divisions during the seven-week regular season and won their divisional playoffs.

In the semi-finals on Tuesday afternoon, the Glenhaven Gardeners from Glenhaven Gardens in Alton, topped the Springfield Splitters from Springfield Supportive Living, and Wii Bowl Better from Eden Supportive Living in North Aurora out bowled the championship team from last year – the Silver Sliders from Cambridge House of Maryville.

On Wednesday morning, the Springfield Splitters won the battle for third place, with Jim Nyberg thrilling those in attendance and those watching on the Internet by bowling a 300 game.

Then, the Glenhaven Gardeners, which took home the third place trophy last year, topped Wii Bowl Better to take home the First Place Trophy.

Meet the Governor Day

AALC held our annual “Meet the Governor Day” at the State Capitol in Springfield on April 12, 2011. More than One hundred & fifty residents and staff members from Supportive Living communities traveled to the Capitol to meet Governor Patrick Quinn.

Many also were able to meet with their local State Senator and Representative.
We had on display all of the winning artwork and scrapbooks.

This year, they especially wanted to express concern about the Governor’s proposed 6% cut in state funding for the Supportive Living program.

After greeting residents at the Capitol, Gov. Quinn stated that “I have heard your call.”
