Affordable Assisted Living Focus of Sept. 20 Radio "House Calls"

Affordable assisted living was the focus of the "House Calls" radio program that aired on Sunday, Sept. 20, on WIND-560 AM.

Rod Burkett, President of BMA Management, Ltd., the company that manages Heritage Woods of Chicago, was one of the featured guests on the program. Rod also serves as President of the Affordable Assisted Living Coalition.

Rod and Wayne Smallwood, Executive Director of the Affordable Assisted Living Coalition, discussed Illinois' innovative Supportive Living Program as a model for affordable assisted living with host Dr. David Fisher.

Both Rod and Wayne helped draft the legislation for the program, which this past year benefitted an estimated 6,000 individuals who were on Medicaid and needed some help to maintain their independence.

Through the Supportive Living Program, adults 65 and older of all incomes who need some help to maintain their independence can benefit from apartment home living; the availability of personal assistance and support services such as meals, housekeeping and laundry; and the availability of companionship of friends of neighbors and social and recreational activities.

Since the opening of the first Supportive Living community in 1999, the number of communities has grown to 115 located throughout the State, housing more than 9,150 apartments.
