BMA Opens Affordable Memory Care Pilot Project

BMA Management, Ltd., has opened White Oaks at Heritage Woods of South Elgin.

“White Oaks is one of the five Affordable Memory Care pilot projects approved by the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services to operate under the state’s Supportive Living program,” says Rod Burkett, President and Chief Executive Officer of BMA.

By operating under the Illinois Supportive Living program, White Oaks is be able to serve older adults of all incomes, including those on Medicaid.

“We are pleased to have been awarded the opportunity to develop one of the five pilot projects,” says Burkett. “There is a tremendous need throughout the state for Affordable Memory Care communities such as White Oaks to serve the growing number of older adults with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia.”

At the Preview Party and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony that was held to mark the completion of construction, Jeanette Mihalik of the Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce noted that, “this place is phenomenal.”

She talked about “how fortunate we are to have Heritage Woods. It is something to brag about.”

The development of White Oaks was part of an $8.4 million expansion of Heritage Woods of South Elgin, which is located in Kane County at corner of McLean Blvd. and Bowes Rd. in South Elgin, Illinois.

BMA has managed Heritage Woods of South Elgin since the affordable assisted living community opened for occupancy in the summer of 2009.

White Oaks features 32 private apartments in four neighborhoods.

“The neighborhoods and the apartments incorporate design features specifically for those with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia,” says Burkett.

“We also added 18 Affordable Assisted Living apartments to the campus, which makes Heritage Woods of South Elgin our largest campus,” says Burkett.

BMA, which ranks as the largest provider of assisted living in Illinois, now operates 36 senior living communities, which together house more than 3,300 homes and apartments.

“Our focus is on touching the lives of residents and their families by providing dignified lifestyles,” says Burkett

“We are in the business of touching the human spirit,” adds Trish Uttich, Administrator of Heritage Woods of South Elgin. “Our emphasis is on providing love, compassion and dignity.”

The Affordable Memory Care apartments were named White Oaks at Heritage Woods of South Elgin because “the White Oak stands strong and proud and grows taller as it ages” says Trish. “The tree is well-rooted and does not lose its identity as the seasons change.”

She adds that, “the colors of the White Oak leaves in the logo for the Affordable Memory Care apartments reflect the change of season inherent in the dementia disease process. Although the seasons change, we remain who we are – strong, proud and rooted in family history and love. It is our mission as caregivers to touch lives and preserve dignity through each season.”
