"There are things you can do to stay healthy and active as you age," according to the National Institute on Aging. Proper nutrition and keeping both your mind and body active along with not smoking, getting regular checkups, and practicing safety habits at home and in the car will help older adults get the most out of life.

The National Institute on Aging notes that older adults can benefit from four types of exercise:

  • Endurance activities such as walking, swimming or riding a bike that build "staying power" and improve the heart and circulatory system.
  • Strengthening exercises that build muscle tissue and help reduce age-related muscle loss.
  • Stretching exercises to help keep the body limber and flexible.
  • Balance exercises to help reduce the chance of falls.
